“I say GEAR, you say UP! GEAR! UP! GEAR! UP!” Is this something you have heard your child say before? If so, you are familiar with the PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) system we use here at SEA.
Our school expectations are built around the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) process. This framework is a school-wide proactive approach to establish the behavioral supports and social culture that are needed for all students in school to achieve social, emotional and academic success.
At SEA, we promote positive behavior and strong school culture in a number of ways. In our monthly PBIS Corner, we will tell you about the different strategies that SEA uses to help build a positive school-wide community that is conducive to both teaching and learning.
Part of PBIS is our partnership with home and families. It is important to work together at home and school to teach children behaviors that are expected at school. As a partnership, sharing in common language will help support students and their success at school. Through this partnership, we can build a positive learning environment for all students at the School of Engineering and Arts.
Every day, students are expected to exhibit GEAR-UP behavior. This means that students are expected to:
G: Set GOALS
E: Show EMPATHY
A: Have a positive ATTITUDE
R: RESPECT all
When a student demonstrates GEAR-UP behavior, he/she is recognized by a staff member and may earn a GEAR-UP slip. These slips are turned in and every Friday, 15-20 slips are drawn and students are given shout-outs over the loudspeaker, get a certificate, and earn a prize. Please ask your child to share with you when he/she earns a GEAR-UP slip. This is worth celebrating!
